Today I worked from home because our girls' school was closed for Columbus Day. Normally CHH is able to stay home with the girls but this semester Monday is one of his busiest days. I was up and on the computer at 6 AM checking emails and doing some research. I got a good couple of hours in before the girls got up. After they were up, I was actually able to do some work at the kitchen table while they played in the living room. We then went to my job to deliver a birthday cake to my paralegal and back for lunch at Chuck E. Cheese. I wanted to do something special with the girls for lunch and I thought this would be a great place to go during the week. My Dad met me there to help out with the girls. The girls had a blast. Needless to say after about an hour my Dad and the girls were wiped out! Jordan went to play at a friend's house and Katelyn went home for a long nap. It allowed me to get several solid hours in for the afternoon. It actually was a very productive day.
Side note: I work with all men who all have stay at home wives. Most people understand a stay at home wife works just as hard (sometimes harder) than most anyone. I'm in a different situation - both husband and wife work in this family. I am also fortunate in that I rarely need to miss work because of the profession my husband is in. With his schedule being more flexible, we are able to switch off with the girls when they are sick or if school is closed. It certainly opens my eyes and I have a new found appreciation for all those other dual income couples who do not have this flexibility. At times, I think it is hard to be in the working world because you are required to give it your all but at the same time what is most important and what you should be giving it all to is your family. It truly is a constant balancing act.
Question: What does a working Mom sacrifice? Her sleep!! To get things done, I either get up really early in the morning before everyone else or I end up staying up too late at night. I remember my Mom saying there were not enough hours in the day and now I know what she meant. I remember as a child not having any idea what she was talking about!
Another side note: I hope my girls grow up to do a job they really love and enjoy. My husband repeats what someone told him -- figure out what you love to do and then figure out how to make money doing it. I wish that for my girls.
