Driving Jordan to school today, we were listening to the radio. On the station I listen to, they play a game called “The Big Fat Liar”. Jordan loves this game because she loves to listen to the stories. Side note: I just hope she doesn’t start saying “Big Fat Liar”!
Anyhow we were listening this morning and she asked me why one of the four people lie about their story. She went on to talk about how lying is not good and people should not lie.
I explained it was a game and three people tell a true story and one person tells a fake story. Listeners than guess for a prize which one is fake.
This lead into our next conversation on a song. She proceeds to tell me that poppies lie. I asked her what she is talking about and she said her music teacher taught her a song about poppies lying. She then asked me “Mommy, why do poppies lie?”
I asked her how the song went and she said some of the words were “where the poppies grow.” It then hit me that she is talking possibly about “lying down”.
I googled the lyrics and think I found the song. It may be “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, MD.
Too cute! Now I’m going to have to explain to her the difference for “lie” between to “tell an untruth” versus “to recline”.
This may be the song (really beautiful song I think):

In Flanders Fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.
PS I love, love, love our conversations in the morning! It is so great to have this time with her.
