Fourth of July Weekend in DC

The girls and I flew back up to DC for the Fourth of July weekend. Katelyn and her Daddy are waiting to get on the metro at our stop - Woodley Park.

While in DC, we went to eat lunch twice at America restaurant at Union Station. Talk about yummy.

The girls with their Daddy in front of his office building.

Of course, we had to see the Supreme Court. What attorney would visit DC and not see this :) Besides, it was on Jordan's treasure hunt map her former kindergarten teacher put together for her.

Jordan -- she is getting so tall.

The Wright Brothers airplane at the museum.

Katelyn on the boat on our way to Mount Vernon - George Washington's home and burial site.

The tomb of George Washington.

"Washington died in the master bedroom at Mount Vernon on December 14, 1799. In his will, he directed that he be buried at Mount Vernon. He also selected a site for a new brick tomb to replace the original burial vault, which was deteriorating. The tomb was completed in 1831 and Washington's body was moved there along with the remains of his wife, Martha, and other family members."

At Mount Vernon

George Washington's home was gorgeous and very grand.

OK, I'm so glad I didn't live back then. I just can't imagine sitting in the bathroom with a couple of other people while using the restroom.

My girls and me at Mount Vernon.

Mount Vernon has a museum which was really interesting about George Washington.

After visiting the museum, the girls wanted ice cream. Katelyn ate all the chocolate off this ice cream bar and then handed me the ice cream portion of it! She is my chocolate girl.

George Washington's Overseer's Quarters.

No surprise here - Katelyn is being carried again.

Back at the hotel doing one of their favorite things -- eating Chinese food (edamame and Chinese pork) in bed while watching IPads. Eating in bed is so cool to them. They call int a picnic in bed.

Got milk?!

Happy Fourth of July!

Katelyn giving her sister a hug.

I got this great picture of a squirrel in a tree as we were walking by.

Back to our usual hang-out while in DC - the Washington National Zoo.

We finally saw a cheetah! Jordan loves cheetahs and each time we visited the zoo we looked for them but never saw one. Success this time!

Lunch at the zoo on the Fourth of July.

Jordan and Katelyn both got these books autographed. The books are all about animals and the writer partnered with Disney. The books are awesome.

Back to see the Pandas.

My girls at the zoo.

Jordan petting the cow in the petting zoo.

The girls loved this at the zoo. They got to look under microscopes at all sorts of different bugs.

There was also a display of animal skeletal bones. Katelyn put these ribs on her head to have antlers :)

Hitching a ride with Daddy.

All dressed and ready to go to see fireworks.

We were walking through the hotel lobby and there were KLM pilots in the lobby. One of the pilots asked me if he could take pictures of my girls. I think he loved them in their American outfits. Several pilots then came over and put their hats on my girls and took pictures. My girls are beginning to get use to pilots liking them since they have been invited into the cockpit several times now and were approached in this hotel lobby while in DC. The girls are always so sweet and polite and of course, cute. Both girls had the pilots smiling.

We went to our friend's country club in Virgina to see fireworks. The club was amazing and all decked out for the Fourth of July. We had the best time.

Katelyn getting her face painted. My kids love to do this.

This couple, Debbie and Sammy, has been friends of CHH's since the early days. They both worked together at a law firm, Steptoe Johnson, in DC right out of law school.

The girls enjoying dinner on a picnic blanket on the lawn at the Country Club.

Beautiful fireworks.

Our last day in DC, CHH had to go to work so the girls picked to go to the Smithsonian's Natural History Museum again. They wanted to see the Butterfly exhibit for a second time.

We also saw a really interesting display on human skeletons along with this mummy above.

The girls were fascinated and so was I.

Katelyn staring at a butterfly as well.

Katelyn

Katelyn loved holding a paintbrush with a butterfly on it.

Jordan did so as well.

The girls loved looking at all the various animals on display at the museum. Jordan really loves owls because of the owls in Harry Potter. She says a snow owl is one of her favorites because it looks like Hedwig from Harry Potter. After the musuem, we had lunch with Daddy and then headed to the zoo again to say a final good-bye to our Panda friends. It was a great last day in DC. I love DC!!
